This cap fitting is suitable for closing the end of a male-threaded flare tube. The fitting is made of CA360 brass for strength and resistance to corrosion and has an operating temperature range of -65 to +250 degrees F (-53 to +121 degrees C). This cap fitting is suitable for closing the end of a tube in lubrication, refrigeration, and hydraulic systems, and in other industrial applications.

Tube fittings are components used for connecting, branching, terminating, and changing the direction of tubing in pneumatic and hydraulic systems. They are made of brass, stainless steel, PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), and other materials that resist corrosion and wear. Tube fittings have various types of connections, including threaded, welded, barbed, and push-to-connect (also called one-touch). Push-to-connect connections do not require tools or sealants. Pennsylvania has a long history of mining and metallurgical activities dating to the Industrial Revolution that helped fuel the economy of the commonwealth and the nation. Coal markets have waned recently due to the transition away from coal to other energy sources, leading to many economically distressed areas in the state. New findings by a team led by Penn State researchers suggest potential economic opportunities from the domestic production of critical minerals.

Rapid, accessible and highly accurate detection of addictive substances such as opiates and cocaine is vital to reducing the adverse personal and societal impacts of addiction, something current drug detection systems can take too long to provide. However, on-site, real-time monitoring of abused drugs in a patient’s system could alert clinicians before dangerous levels are reached, and such an approach may not be far away.

The second edition of the 2022 Materials Spotlight Series will be on 5G Infrastructure.  This forum will look at the short-, mid-, and long-term challenges for the connectivity industry, including maximizing use of the electromagnetic spectrum, increasing demands for speed and latency, data deluge, and getting value out of IoT.  This information-age-relevant discussion will highlight viewpoints from 3 major industry participants, and 3 faculty groups working to keep Penn State on the bleeding edge of research in the field.

A Culture of Interdisciplinary Research

Penn State’s investment in its interdisciplinary research institutes, including the Materials Research Institute (MRI), has created a culture of strong collaborations across disciplines. At Penn State, many researchers have the support of both their academic departments and the university-wide institutes, such as MRI. By encouraging crosscutting research, MRI and its sister institutes open up traditional silos of knowledge to the stimulus of other viewpoints and new ideas. This mingling of disciplines, often called “convergence,” brings together the physical and life sciences with engineering and computation to solve the most complex problems facing society today and in the future.
